Pillaite create history by winning Mumbai University Runners-up title of Football to Navi Mumbai for the First time
Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science, New Panvel won the Runners-up title of Mumbai University Football Tournament where 216 colleges from the University of Mumbai competed for the title. This is the first time that a college out of Mumbai winning this title.
The team captain Rahul Thakur, M.Com. Part-I student led the team from the front as he scored 10 goals in the tourney. Rahul Thakur also adjudged top scorer in the recently held Navi Mumbai Mayors Cup Football Tournament held at Fr. Agnels ground, Vashi.
During their journey to the finals in the super league stage the Pillaite beat K.C. College, Churchgate with a remarkable margin of (8-1). In the next league match they beat Clara College, CST by 4-1 and in the last league match they outplayed a very strong and last year champion Thakur College by 3-1.
In the knock-out stage of super eight the team beat S.M. Shetty College and entered into the semi-finals. In the semi-final match the team overpowered a strong St. Andrews College, (who also hold the defending Bronze) by 2-1.
In the Finals, Pillai take on Rizvi ASC, a star studded team with 6 Indian Football League players including their goal keeper. In the first half both team made a lot of unsuccessful attempt to score, as Pillaite stunned the Rizvi's more frequently by attacking their fronts but no goal was scored. In the second half also the teams made many attempt but everything gone in vein.
A goal less tie in the final blow of the whistle made both the teams under pressure. PCACS's main goal keeper Ismail Surve was admitted in the hospital due to malaria, and the second goal keeper Suraj Nair who played excellent performance whenever he has given chance to secure the post given the duty at this juncture of penalty. In the tie breaking penalty shootout Pillaite concede defeat by 4-5 as Sidhant who otherwise scored many goals in the tournament lost his control and send the ball above the cross bar and Pillaite settled with the truth as luck is not in their side. Besides Captain Rahul Bheke, Deepak Hirmali, Adhmane and Aniket Duri played excellent display of soccer through-out the tourney. The Coach Mr. K. T. John concede the defeat in a winning note by saying it is not our day but my boys proved a point that soccer can grow out of Mumbai City also and appreciated the players performance throughout the tourney.
